What is visual management, and does your factory need it?

Placeholder image: factory team holding a stand-up meeting around a shift performance board

[Placeholder] Visual management makes a factory's standards visible at a glance: tools, performance, safety. A plain-English introduction from one of the UK's first specialists.

[Placeholder copy] Visual management is a simple idea with an intimidating vocabulary. Strip away the lean jargon and it means this: anyone should be able to walk into your factory and see, without asking, whether things are normal or abnormal.

[Placeholder copy] The classic tools are shadow boards, where a missing spanner is visible from across the cell; performance boards, where the shift's numbers are written where the shift can see them; and floor marking, where walkways and storage areas hold their shape because the line says so.

[Placeholder copy] The trap is treating it as decoration. A shadow board designed from a catalogue rather than your actual tool list becomes shelf storage within a month. The board has to match the work, which is why we design from photographs and tool lists rather than templates.

[Placeholder copy] Does your factory need it? If your team loses time looking for things, if the morning meeting happens around a clipboard, or if audits keep flagging the same housekeeping issues, then yes, and the entry cost is a single well-designed board, not a programme.
